When we bought the Oyster House at Newton Ferrers, it was a quirky little building in need of a lot of tender loving care, but with a location and views to die for! This is the story of it's transformation into something that we think will be rather special.

Farewell to the old stone fire surround
Well, it had to go one day soon, didn't it? I knocked out the old fire surround today and turned it into a very large pile of rubble. Interestingly, there seems to be part of an old stone wall behind the left hand side of the chimney, although it does not go right across the full width of the end wall. We are not sure yet if this can easily be taken out or if it is destined to become a bit of "feature" stonework. We also discovered that the old chimney breast is not exactly sturdy, so we have got to decide whether to knock it out completely and, if we repair it and keep it, whether the flue from the new stove will go up it. Decisions, decisions!
